prove it!
Medical debt pursuit, or more precisely the
endless harassment of patients unable (as opposed to unwilling) to pay their
bills has gained increasing prominence as a major social issue.
Among the more egregious practices in the collections
industry is the sale of old medical debt – for pennies on the dollar – to bill
collectors who will then aggressively pursue this debt at full face value for
an additional two to 10 more destructive years. This is regardless of the
personal circumstances of people who clearly are still struggling with the economic
consequences of illness and accidents.
My
co-author Jerry Ashton and I explore this practice in our book The Patient, The
Doctor, and the Bill Collector. In this chapter we discuss how our RIP Medical
Debt charity, inspired by the debt abolishment work pioneered by Rolling
Jubilee, was created specifically to focus on locating medical debt portfolios,
buying them, and then forgiving every last penny.
We know
that we are not alone in our concern for those needing medical care but unable
to pay the resultant bill and that many people are left with financial stress
that can endure longer than the physical harm done by illness or accident. But,
we also knew that it was difficult to gain a national awareness.
Thanks
to this June 5 airing of the HBO comedy series, Last Week Tonight Show with
John Oliver, there are a lot more of us now privy to this collection industry
practice and the debt treadmill it creates. In a painfully hilarious (debt as
funny? Somehow, yes) piece, John Oliver triumphantly Out-Oprah’s Oprah in
giving away valuable gifts.
John
Oliver gave away nearly $15,000,000 in medical debt that evening! Oliver and
his LWT staff had laboriously located and purchased that debt and then donated
it to the RIP Medical Debt charity so that it could be forgiven with great
fanfare before a studio audience and millions of viewers. $14+ million. Poof!

A 17-year-old, 400-pound
male lowland gorilla, Harambe, was shot and killed by the zoo's dangerous
animal response team about 10 minutes after the boy made it into the enclosure.
Zoo director Thane Maynard said
that the boy crawled through the railing and fell into the moat just before 4
p.m. Saturday. A Cincinnati fire department incident report says that the
gorilla "was violently dragging and throwing the child" when they
were called.
The child was in between the gorilla's legs when the gorilla was
shot, fire officials said.
"It's a sad day all
around," Maynard said. "They made a tough choice and they made the
right choice, because they saved that little boy's life. It could have been
very bad."

Beyond the wall, Bran Stark has
been training with the Three-Eyed Raven, learning to use his powers to view the
past. As part of his training, Bran witnesses visions of Ned and Howland Reed
fighting at the Tower of Joy, and of the Children of the Forest creating the
Night King. Bran encounters the Night King in another vision and is marked by
him, allowing the White Walkers and their army of wights to enter the cave.
Bran and Meera manage to escape, but Bran's direwolf Summer, Hodor, the
Children of the Forest and the Three-Eyed Raven are killed. Bran and Meera are
rescued by Bran's uncle, Benjen Stark, who had been thought to be missing.
Having
been captured by the khalasar of Khal Moro, Daenerys Targaryen is brought to
Vaes Dothrak to live out her days with the Dosh Khaleen. Jorah Mormont and
Daario Naharis learn of her captivity and travel to Vaes Dothrak. When the
khals gather to determine Daenerys' fate, she sets fire to the Temple of the
Dosh Khaleen, killing the khals but emerging unscathed. Jorah leaves to find a
cure for his greyscale, while Daenerys marches on Meereen with the Dothraki.
Along the march, Daenerys senses Drogon is near; she rides him to the rest of
the khalasar, and declares that they will sail to Westeros.
Jaime
Lannister returns to King's Landing with Myrcella Baratheon's corpse. Tensions
escalate between Tommen Baratheon, Cersei Lannister, and the Faith Militant and
the High Sparrow, as the High Sparrow refuses to let Tommen visit Margaery in
prison or Cersei attend Myrcella's funeral. Jaime and the Tyrell army attempt
to liberate Margaery and Loras, only to find Margaery has become a follower of
the High Sparrow and Tommen has forged an alliance with the Faith Militant.
Tommen relieves Jaime from the Kingsguard, sending him to Riverrun to assist
House Frey in reclaiming it from the Blackfish, Brynden Tully.
After
Doran Martell receives word of Myrcella's death, Ellaria Sand kills him and
seizes control of Dorne, with the Sand Snakes also killing his heir Trystane.
The
Sons of the Harpy burn the Meereenese fleet, stranding Tyrion Lannister, Varys,
and the rest of Daenerys' court in Meereen. Varys discovers that the Sons are
financed by the masters of Astapor and Yunkai, who have reclaimed the cities
from the freedmen, as well as the slavers of Volantis. Despite the misgivings
of Missandei, Grey Worm, and the freedmen of Meereen, Tyrion meets with
representatives of the slave cities to offer them seven years to transition
from slaving. He also meets with the Red Priestess Kinvara, who announces
Daenerys is a legendary hero prophesied by the Lord of Light and pledges her
support
Arya lives in the streets of
Braavos as a blind beggar. She resumes her training with the Faceless Men and
her vision is restored after she claims to be "No One" repeatedly.
She is given the task of assassinating an actress portraying Cersei Lannister
in a play about the War of Five Kings, but instead saves the actress and warns
her of the assassination. The Waif is ordered to kill Arya for her
disobedience.
Sansa Stark
and Theon Greyjoy are rescued by Brienne of Tarth. Sansa, Brienne, and Podrick
Payne journey on to the Wall to seek Jon Snow's protection, while Theon returns
to the Iron Islands. He returns to find that his father, King Balon Greyjoy, is
dead, and offers to his sister Yara to support her claim at the Kingsmoot.
However, their uncle Euron Greyjoy appears at the Kingsmoout; although he
confesses to killing Balon, he is named king after declaring that he will
seduce Daenerys Targaryen and use their combined might to conquer Westeros.
Theon and Yara flee with the Iron Fleet.
In the
Vale, Littlefinger arrives at Runestone, claiming that Sansa was kidnapped by
the Boltons, and convinces Lord Robin Arryn to send the Vale forces to war.
In
Winterfell, Ramsay Bolton's status as heir to the North is threatened by
Sansa's escape, and after Walda Bolton gives birth to a son, Ramsay moves to
secure his position by killing Roose Bolton, Walda, and his half-brother.
Several powerful Northern lords arrive at Winterfell to pledge their loyalty,
including Harald Karstark and Smalljon Umber, who presents Ramsay with Osha,
Rickon Stark, and the severed head of Rickon's direwolf Shaggydog. Ramsay kills
Osha and imprisons Rickon.
At the
Wall, Edd gathers the Wildlings to imprison the mutineers who killed Jon Snow.
Davos persuades Melisandre to attempt a resurrection of Jon, which is
ultimately successful. After executing the mutineers, Jon leaves the Night's
Watch, as his death released him from his vows. After Sansa arrives at the
Wall, Jon initially refuses to fight the Boltons. However, after Ramsay sends a
letter to Castle Black (threatening to kill Rickon, Jon and the Wildlings if
Sansa is not returned), Jon decides to gather Stark loyalists to fight. Brienne
is sent to treat with the Blackfish.

The Cincinnati Zoo has been packed with visitors
this holiday weekend when many of them were shocked by an incident in which a
4-year-old boy crawled through a railing and fell into a moat in a gorilla
habitat. A family trip to the zoo Saturday afternoon
turned terrifying, witness Kim O’Connor said. O’Connor and her family captured some of the
chilling moments inside Gorilla World when 17-year old Harambe grabbed the boy
— video seen only on WLWT. WLWT has removed the most graphic portions of
the video, during which the gorilla dragged the boy through the water. Harambe, a 400-pound, 17-year-old male lowland
